Work safely

There are a number of health and safety problems that can be caused by the use of computers – though the risks to the user can be greatly reduced by taking sensible precautions:

eye-strain and headaches – can be caused by working for long periods staring at a computer monitor (VDU) – the solution is to take regular beaks or to refocus on something elsewhere in the room at regular intervals.  Also a screen filter can be useful – as can diffuse lighting in the room being used.

Repetitive strain injury – RSI – aches and pains and possible damage to muscles and tendons caused by repeating the same actions over and over again – for example using a mouse or keyboard – the solution is to use a well designed keyboard, possibly including a wrist-rest – and to take regular breaks.   See this article for more information

Back and circulation problems – often caused by sitting for long periods using a computer – the solution is to sit correctly (the ideal working height is for the user’s eyes to be level with the top of the VDU) using a height-adjustable chair with a suitable backrest – and to take regular breaks.

It is also important to avoid trailing cables in an office, to reduce the danger of tripping and falling.

Electrical equipment must be checked for safety - to avoid risk of electrocution.
