Keep dated backup copies of files in another location

Backup tape drive - this is the type of drive used overnight every night a Hyde Tech to create a full backup copy of every file on the school network.  A user can make sure of always having a spare copy of their file by saving it into their user area on the network AND onto a floppy disk.

This may be as simple as saving work onto both the hard disk (or network storage area for the user) and also onto a floppy disk (which can be taken home) – to ensure that a backup copy of the file is available.  A school or college network will have backup software and hardware installed to save work files regularly.  The backup policy will include occasional full system backups that are stored off-site in case of a fire in the network office, for example.   Never rely on this type of network backup as the only other source of a work file, as restoring files can be a long process – and may sometimes not be possible!  The home user should ensure that backups are made of valuable data files.

A CD Re-writer or CD Writer drive provides almost 700 Megabytes of storage on one CD disk DVD writer drives can store over 5 Gigabytes of data on one DVD disk.  This is likely to become the backup storage system used by home users in the future due to convenience and price.

A CDR (CD writer), CDRW (CD rewriter) writer drive is also useful for backups - especially at home.  CD disks ca store around 700Mb of data - so with careful planning and the correct backup software - a home user can have complete backups of their computer data stored on CDROM.  New DVD writers are now on sale - but are very costly at the moment - they are likely to become cheaper as more people realise how useful they can be!
