Electronic mail (e-mail or simply email) requires the user to install a program called an “email client”.  The user also needs to obtain an email address from their ISP so that any mail sent to them will always reach them correctly.  A standard form is used for the email that can be created as a simple text message or in a format similar to a web page that can include a range of fonts and graphics.  This can be done when offline (ie. not connected to the Internet) or online.  When completed the email is sent by the user to the recipient – to do this the computer must be online.  The recipient’s ISP will store the email in a mailbox so that when they connect to the Internet (and run their own email client software) the email will be downloaded to their own computer and can be read.

If you don't already have an email account you could open one at www.yahoo.co.uk or www.hotmail.co.uk

If you need help using your Yahoo! email account click here

If you register with Hotmail you will also need to sign up for a .Net Passport.  Full details of this will be found at the Hotmail website.
