Work safely

There are a number of health and safety problems that can be caused by the use of computers – though the risks to the user can be greatly reduced by taking sensible precautions:

eye-strain and headaches – can be caused by working for long periods staring at a VDU – the solution is to take regular beaks or to refocus on something elsewhere in the room at regular intervals.  Also a screen filter can be useful – as can diffuse lighting in the room being used.

Repetitive strain injury – RSI – aches and pains and possible damage to muscles and tendons caused by repeating the same actions over and over again – for example using a mouse or keyboard – the solution is to use a well designed keyboard, possibly including a wrist-rest – and to take regular breaks.  See this article for more information

Back and circulation problems – often caused by sitting for long periods using a computer – the solution is to sit correctly (the ideal working height is for the user’s eyes to be level with the top of the VDU) using a chair with a suitable backrest – and to take regular breaks.
