Internet Security

The Internet is so huge that it cannot be fully checked and controlled by any government or organisation.  However, some controls are put on the use of the Internet by ISPs and the organisations providing the user connection (such as workplaces and colleges).  Often filters are used to prevent access to certain types of website or newsgroup.  Chat rooms (areas where Internet users can exchange text messages) can be blocked.  However, most of the responsibility for using the Internet safely is on the user.  Colleges and workplaces usually have “Internet Use Policies” providing guidance on what is and isn’t allowed.  They often back this up by using special software to track Internet use by each user – so a full record of all websites visited and emails sent can be examined.
