Multiple criteria searches: Often a simple search will list thousands of possible matches
- it would be impossible to check even a small fraction of these – so a more
detailed and accurate search technique is needed. By entering certain key words (AND, OR, NOT etc) as part of
the string the search engine will be able to display results better suited to
the user’s needs. See the table
below for an example of how using multiple search criteria can help to focus on
the information required. Example John wants to find out about the history of Hadfield in Derbyshire, UK (his local town) between 1800 and 1900 (the nineteenth century). He uses www.google.com for this task. Using the “normal” search tools revealed the following numbers of possible “hits” – but the Google website includes an “advanced search” tool – by keeping the string of words and adding a search for the exact phrase “Nineteenth Century” the number of “hits” is a useful 22. By looking at the “summary” of each site listed it will now be possible to find the most suitable website(s) containing exactly the type of information required.
