Managing your files on a network

It is just as important at school as it is on a home computer to manage your files correctly.  This means both saving them in a suitable folder or subfolder - see the screenshot for examples of folder names that help me to keep my work stored safely here I can easily find it again.

It also means deleting files when they are no longer needed.  In any school or college the amount of hard disk storage space is limited - and with over 1000 users it is important that each user doesn't use more than their fair share of the amount of space.

In the example shown I have 15 different versions of the same file - each taking up valuable space.  On my home computer this isn't to much of a problem as I have plenty of storage space available - but if this was the school network I should remove 14 of the versions - and keep a backup of the final one on another disk somewhere off site so that I can work on it even if the school network crashes and my file is damaged or deleted.

Creating a new folder in your work area is easy and takes only a few seconds.  It will save you many hours of searching for files which have been "lost" in a huge long list on drive N:\MyWork.
