Network hub: This is a mass of cables and flashing LEDs and is housed in a large cabinet in the network office.  

Every workstation has a different socket on the hub – and the flashing LEDs tell the Network Manager if there is a fault anywhere in the system.  Flashing is good.  No flashing LEDs means that the network isn’t working as it should be.
