Network Security

Networks and the data held on them should be kept secure. There are many different ways of improving network security, including the use of:

logical access control, i.e. use of user identity (ID) codes, password systems and access rights

control of physical access, for example passcards, locks on workstations

virus checking software

backup and recovery procedures

archiving.

You will need to know how each of these security measures is used, and how they can be used in combination.

You must also understand the responsibilities of a network manager in maintaining network security. You must learn how the network manager attempts to improves network security by:

user group maintenance (creating users, allocating passwords, setting permissions, allocating file space)

installing software

monitoring and testing the network (disk space, deleting files, print queue, user activity)

connecting workstations, cables, peripherals

virus checking.
