Searching for information:
The Internet contains so many
web pages that finding the information the user requires would be like looking
for a “needle in a million haystacks”.
Fortunately some Internet organisations have developed “Search
Engines” to help us to find what we want.
These “Search Engines” contain enormous databases detailing all the
websites that have been listed – and new sites are being added continuously to
these listings. Sites such as www.google.com
and www.yahoo.com enable the user to enter
the word or phrase (word string) they are looking for – and in a few seconds a
list of possible matches will be displayed on their computer.
Remember that the search string must be entered carefully and correctly
otherwise the results will be meaningless! A number of possible matches (often
the first 10) will be displayed – and the user can then visit any of these by
clicking on their URL. If none
provide the information needed, further pages of suggested matches may be
available. |
