Using a network

Each time a user wants to use a computer at Hyde Tech (as in any other school, college or business with a computer network) they need to first logon using their own username and password.  It is essential that they keep the password private to avoid the risk of others stealing their identity and making use of their work areas (possibly deleting their files etc.).

Each workstation will be set up with the software and hardware necessary to carry out the work required.  The user will use their mouse and keyboard to start and run applications which will have icons on the Windows desktop.  The application will actually run from either the File Server or on their own workstation - depending on how it has been installed.

When the user saves a file it should be saved on drive P: - this is a hard disk drive on the File Server and can be accessed ONLY by the user - or by someone with special administrator rights to open files anywhere on the network (such as the Network Manager or ICT teacher).

The user should save their work files in folders that help them to quickly and easily find what they have saved. See the web page on network file management for advice on this.

At home it is quite easy to connect computers together (I've done it so it must be easy!)

You MUST read this article if you want to know how to set up and use a home network - it is super! http://www.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htm
