Wide Area Networks (WAN)

The example shown here is of a WAN where the company has 2 sites - and each site has its own server

If LANs are usually in one place (inside a single building for example) a WAN is spread over a wider area – sometimes this could be computer network for a company in several locations in one country – or even in several countries.  The computers are connected together by special data lines – (like telephone lines but faster and more advanced).  These networks can be private (such as those within a company or other organisation) or public (such as the Internet).
