One important role of a Network Manager is to prevent misuse of the Internet by those having access to it.

Whether at home, in a school, or in a business, the Internet provides access to millions of web pages - some of which are completely unsuitable for young people (and some unsuitable for adults as well).  Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) filter some of the worst sites or newsgroups to prevent access to them by users.

In a school the Network Manager is able to log all websites visited by every student and teacher.  His job is helped by special filtering software which scans each page before it is displayed on the computer screen.  Certain words are "banned" and will prevent the page from showing - and each time a "banned" page is visited a log is kept of who was logged on, when the visit took place, where the user was logged on, and what the site address was!

Some students have had nasty surprises when a senior member of staff has been forced to inform their parents of Internet misuse.

The Network Manager can also "block" the downloading of files from the Internet.  So, for example, files with the file extension .mp3 are banned and cannot be downloaded at Hyde Technology School.  Also anything that is a program file (usually with the file extension .exe) are also blocked to try to prevent damage from viruses.

NOTE FROM K PARRY:  When I first created this website two pages wouldn't work properly and were "blocked" by the filtering software - because they contained banned words.  One was a page about the use of chat rooms on the Internet - and the other was a page which mentioned a file sharing program by name.  These pages had to be changed so that students  could access them at Hyde Technology School!
