On the level below:

Designing and producing a desktop published document for a customer.

Before you can begin to design the document there are some things you will need to find out from your customer........ for example:

bulletthe size and orientation of the document to be created
bulletthe content of the document (text, images, logos etc)
bulletwhere the document will be used (for example a newspaper advertisement will be designed differently from a large billboard poster)
bulletIf the document should be designed in colour or black and white
bulletHow much time they will pay for you to spend designing the document
bulletThe date the document is needed
bulletHow many copies of the document are needed
bulletetc....

When you know the customer's requirements it is then important to create a draft design - and get it checked by the customer.

Why should it be checked by the customer:

bulletTo make sure there are no errors in the document
bulletTo check that it meets the customer's requirements
bulletTo give the customer chance to make any last-minute changes
bulletTo save the cost of reprinting if there is something the customer doesn't like
